Tarantula
5/10 by Wuchak March 12, 2026
**_A big axx spider threatens a desert town in the Southwest_** This debuted almost three years before the similar “Earth vs the Spider.” It’s adult-oriented and scientifically based compared to the later flick, which involves teens and 50s’ rock ‘n’ roll waking the (supposedly) dead spider. It’s worth watching just to go back in time to the mid-50s and observe how life was back then, including the styles and décor, not to mention the manner of speaking. John Agar makes for a quality masculine protagonist while brunette Mara Corday is appealing on the feminine front at the age of…

Frankenstein vs. The Mummy
5/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
Can you imagine any university nowadays appointing anyone called “Dr. Victor Frankenstein”? Well one in New York thought he’d be ideal and yes, Max Rhyser is soon up to his ancestral old tricks in cahoots with the caretaker “Carter” (John Pickett). Meantime, at this very same seat of learning, Egyptologist “Khalil” (Ashton Leigh) has just returned from an expedition with the mummy of the legendary pharaoh “Userkare” who wasn’t exactly known for his kindness and consideration. Now not wishing to introduce any more scientists into this review, but you don’t have to be Einstein to figure out what…

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

Funny movie! Had some very good moments and emotional. Bit on the silly side at points but was actually a surprise. Had a good story and kept me interested even though I'm normally a sci-fi fantasy guy.…

For Whom the Bell Tolls
6/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
Trying to adapt this Ernest Hemingway novel for the screen was always going to be quite an ask, and for me it was just one too much for Gary Cooper - even if the author had written it with him in mind for the role of the intrepid “Jordan”. He is more of an academic rather than a crusader, but he is experienced with explosives, restless and soon finds himself attracted by the Internationals Brigade fighting for the republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. With heavy snow on the ground, he is tasked by their Soviet armourers with working under the audacious “Pilar” (Katina Paxinou) to mine an …

We Go On
by thingsthatgobumpinthenight March 12, 2026
We Go On (Remastered) – Review Fear of death is a powerful idea to build a horror film around, and We Go On uses it well. Instead of relying on jump scares, the film builds tension through atmosphere and a lingering sense of unease. It follows a man determined to prove that something exists after death, and his search for evidence slowly leads him into increasingly strange and personal encounters. The concept is simple but effective, and the tension remains strong throughout. While the pacing is slower than many modern horror films, it allows the atmosphere and mystery to develop…

Magnificent Obsession
7/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
I felt a bit sorry for poor old “Bob” (Rock Hudson) in this. Sure, he’s an obnoxious and selfish playboy but when he gets involved in an accident that requires the resuscitator he awakens to quite a lot of disdain from those in the hospital. Why? Well it seems that at the same time, a local surgeon got into difficulties of his own and as the machine was busy elsewhere, well he perished. “Bob” is fairly upset by this news, so offers the hospital $25,000 to pay his bill and get it another gadget. This only seems to make matters worse for the recently widowed “Helen” (Jane Wyman) who gives him sh…

It Should Happen to You
7/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
“Gladys” (Judy Holliday) is quite an ambitious lass but as she heads into her thirties, her career is seriously stalling. After her latest let down, she heads to Central Park and that’s where she encounters “Pete” (Jack Lemmon). He’s a struggling documentary film maker who takes an instant shine to her. She, on the other hand, initially just sees in him another opportunity to develop her career. Then a giant billboard comes up for lease in the centre of New York and she hits on the idea of just putting up a great poster of herself on it for three months and seeing what happens. He, having now …

Seven Men from Now
7/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
“Stride” (Randolph Scott) is a man conflicted. His own failings had led to his wife having to work in the Wells Fargo office and that’s where she was killed when it was relieved of $20,000 in gold. Now this former sheriff has to wrestle with his own grief and guilt as well as pursue the men whom he knew perpetrated the crime. As he chases them, he encounters would-be pioneers “John” (Walter Reed) and “Annie” (Gail Russell) and so teams up to help them. Then they are joined by the scheming “Masters” (Lee Marvin) - with whom “Stride” has some previous, and his chum “Clete” (Red Barry) who are al…

Fifty Shades Darker
5/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
Poor old “Christian” (Jamie Dornan) is pining for “Ana” (Dakota Johnson) and so manages to wheedle his way back into her life - by buying her publisher employers, and by promising to change from his more sadistic self into something altogether more agreeable to her. Snag? Well she isn’t really interested in a newly reformed boyfriend, but instead craves the leather trappings of their sexual adventures. What she isn’t so keen on, either, is her introduction to some of his previous playmates - some of whom are less than impressed with his current infatuation, especially when he mentions the “m” …

Midwinter Break
6/10 by CinemaSerf March 12, 2026
According to novelist Bernard MacLaverty, this took almost nine years from contract to can and had quite a bumpy ride along the way via writers' strikes and COVID before they managed to recruit the services of Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds and take us all to Amsterdam. We know from the opening scenes that both hail from Belfast and that she, whilst pregnant, was caught up in the troubles necessitating their relocation to Glasgow. Now married for thirty-odds years, they live separate lives with “Stella” fairly devout with her faith and “Gerry” with his Scotch. It’s all amicable enough, thoug…
